It really boils down to options, as there aren't many. If you want to profit (directly) from a rise or fall in the price of an agricultural commodity, then you can either buy (or short) futures or the ETNs/ETFs that track that commodity. ETFs & ETN's might seem like the more efficient option due to most brokers moving towards a zero-commission model but that might not necessarily be the case.

Of course, one needs to have sufficient capital in order to properly diversify & not be over-exposed to a particular commodity due to the leverage factor of futures in addition to understanding the nuances of trading futures such as roll dates and the quirky trading hours on most ag commodities that don't align with the stock market or most other futures contracts.

Most of the ag commodity ETNs do a pretty decent job of tracking the futures although they do tend lag due to their expense ratios. With that being said, commissions at most brokers are so low nowadays, especially in relation to the net dollar exposure (factoring in the leverage) on futures contracts that the cost of the rolls is most likely lower than the expenses that are skimmed off the top of the ETNs.
