Careful, Goldman Sachs just upgraded Verizon to a strong buy based on it’s resilience for bear markets and strong balance sheet.
They didn’t even take into consideration that Verizon is the leading player in multi-billion dollar deal involving the FCC. Intelset, SES, and others are auctioning off 5G bandwidth. Verizon and AT&T are the leading candidates to acquire the valuable spectrum. The current deadline for the ~$10 Billion offer from the FCC is next month. If Verizon strikes a deal with Intelsat (or even to acquire Intelsat and the spectrum rights), Verizon’s stock could go up. Trump has prioritized a fast 5G rollout in speeches and in writing.

I like VZ. I’ve owned it for a long time in my IRA. I believe the reason it has not fallen as much as the broader market is b/c the very last two things people will give up, no matter how difficult the economy gets, are their shoes and their cell phones. That, and it pays a hefty 4% dividend in a climate when you’re hard-pressed to find bonds that pay that. For these reasons, the stock has some “recession proof” aspects to it. In fact, on down days in the market, you’ll typically see VZ up. It’s almost traded like a bond hedge, in that regard.

All that being said, I have the very same chart here in my files as Randy does above, and I can’t argue with the technicals. They are compelling. As such, I sold some of my long position this morning, with the intention of buying it back at lower levels should this forecasted pullback occur.
