TD Ameritrade is a good all-around broker; decent commission rates, low account balance & trade minimums to avoid any monthly account fees, good charts & more. For more active traders, Interactive Brokers has some of the lowest commissions but their charts are severely lacking IMO & as they cater to active traders, they will assess some pretty hefty fee if you don't place enough trades each month.

Maybe some others can chime in as well but I think that TD Ameritrade's Thinkorswim trading platform is one of the best for the average retail trader that doesn't trade very actively & doesn't want to pay additional fees to subscribe to a stand-alone charting platform.
