Is that indicative of smart money moving out of the mega-cap stocks into small/mid-cap stocks (more bang for your buck) since they were beat up the most? This makes me think that we are now in a bull trend (long term) and portfolio diversification is taking place. Any comments? Thanks!

I like to say that one day does not make a trend so best not to take too much from that but yesterday, I noticed a quite unusual occurrence where the vast majority of the stocks within both the SPX & NDX were trading green while all 5 market-leading FAAMG stocks were trading red, or at least the point at which I checked the holdings of both. That would be indicative of institutional distribution: selling what they hold the most of into strength (a broad-based rally). But again, one day does not make a trend & even more importantly, we have all 5 FAAMGs reporting this week so we'll have to assess the charts after their earnings are out of the way.

I don't understand the mechanics of the market. It all seems like tail wagging the dog. The market may be the sum of the parts but it more often than not is backfilled isn't it? As example, last night Futures are up,SPY before market is in tandem, and then at the Open the market took the sum of SPX and decided to go dumpster diving into financials, energy, etc to distribute and justify a irrationally exuberant SPX/SPY.

@rsotc Thanks Randy. I was looking at this same sector weighting issue for a while and how it has skewed the valuations for the indices. Inordinately strong positive correlations. Posted some supplemental analysis with additional correlation divergences building.
