You bring a good point but I believe it is all about A) how far the market drops and more importantly B) how fast (or not) it bounces back.

Case in point, COVID caused a 36% bear market in the S&P 500 but if you blinked, you missed it (6 weeks only, followed by an explosive V recovery.

So what happens when the market has a huge outside drop like this, the longer it says down at deep losses, the more it will impact consumer spending (which is about 70% of GDP).

Most brokerage accounts & 401k plan generate quarterly statements (although most brokerage accts will send one at the end of the month if there is any activity, otherwise quarterly).

As such, other than those that are glued to their phone or computer constantly checking the balance of their retirement accts (given, a large number) there are a lot of folks that still keep their head buried in the sand & only look at their quarterly stmts. As such, the longer the market stays down, the more folks see just how much they’ve lost & that translates to lower spending habits.

I’m sorry. I just saw this (Wed morning) & can’t recall those levels. Do you remember which time frame (5-min, 60-min charts) etc. I was talking about?

While I had little doubt the US & China will ultimately make a deal, I have a hard time seeing them or Trump backing off as they are both cut from the same mold (bull headed & both have boxed themselves into a corner with strong rhetoric that they won’t yield an inch to the other side). As such, neither Trump or China can give an inch now without losing face & looking weak (something neither are likely to do).

Something will get figured out as the two largest economies in the world are driving 100mph straight towards each other in a game of chicken & if neither flinches & veers off the road, they collide & the results (an outright stock market crash in both countries that break the financial system, including but not limited to the banks) will be catastrophic.

I was so bearish on the tariff but try to catch the bounce and now holding loss as well. hahaha need to learn not to catch falling knife.
