Generally speaking, I think it would be prudent to be heading into tonight's duo of big earnings heavily short or adding much short exposure right before the reports but that's generally speaking. For example, someone that expects a big drop immediate following those earnings report without any current short exposure related to tech or the NDX might opt to take a starter position as to avoid having to potentially chase or miss an objective entry tomorrow on a big gap down. Likewise, an aggressive trader wanting to bet on a big post-earnings drop might want to establish a short position in advance. All specific to one's unique position, risk-tolerance, & outlook for the market post AAPL & AMZN.
