You can use a source, such as Yahoo Finance (from the screenshot below, click on 'Statistics') to view the percentage of the float (i.e.- all shares on the market/publicly-traded... not treasury shares the company holds) held by institutions (mutual funds, hedge funds, pension plans, ETFs, etc.). The remainder (less the usually small percentage held by insiders) would be the shares held by the public (retail traders & investors).
