A received a question from a relatively new member to the site today inquiring about where to find the trade ideas on RSOTC & figured that I would share my reply for all to see as there are multiple ways to access both the official & unofficial trade ideas shared on the site, not to mention those shared by members within the trading room:

There are two types of trade ideas shared on the site, official & unofficial.

Official trades are typically those that I have the highest degree of confidence in & they also meet the criteria of either a swing trade or a long-term (trend) trade (or a Growth & Income trade, which is a sub-category of the latter). Official trades will always list explicit entry triggers or levels, price target(s), suggested stop(s) and beta-adjusted position size, which increases or reduces the position from a typical position size to account for expected above or below average risk or volatility on the trade. All official trades are also followed up with front page posts, usually when a profit target(s) or the stop is hit, as well as any other significant developments, such as a pullback to support that offers another objective entry or add-on to the trade.

For every one official trade posted on the home page (aka- front page), I easily post 20 or more unofficial trade ideas, not including the trade ideas that might come from the chart opinion requests from other members that I post in the trading room. Some of the unofficial trades are very short-term swing trades, day trades, very aggressive/speculative trades or futures trades, which typically don’t fit the criteria of the official swing trades that will mesh with the majority of traders’ preferred type of trades. E.g- Official trade ideas are always individual stocks, ETFs or ETNs, never futures or options, as many traders don’t have access to either of the latter.

For the past several months, due to the extremely high volatility as well as the very rapidly changing outlook for the market & various sectors, the official trade ideas have been unusually light. I’ve actually shared quite a few unofficial trade ideas that really stood out as compelling via the sector analysis videos on posted on the front page & for the most part, any trade ideas that make it to the front page, whether official or unofficial, wouldn’t be there if I didn’t think they were compelling. The primary issue that prevents me from sharing more of those unofficial trade as official trade is the time & effort required to annotate the charts, identify the specific price targets & stops, and then post an update on all the official trade ideas. As such, I will usually just do a video on a sector that stands out, highlighting which ETF can be traded for that sector as well as my favorite individual stocks within the sector.

Here are the two most recent sector trade idea videos: CUT & WOOD (timber & forestry sector) Dec 31st: https://rightsideofthechart.com/timber-forestry-sector-trade-ideas-video/ and the Internet Content & Information Sector, Jan 8th: https://rightsideofthechart.com/internet-sector-analysis-trade-ideas/

I should have added above that there is also a category called ‘Unofficial Trade-Ideas’ which is a sub-category accessible under Trade Ideas on the top menu of the site. Both of the videos above were assigned to that category so that’s a quick way to reference the unofficial trade ideas that were posted on the front page (but not those in the trading room).

Regarding the unofficial trade ideas in the trading room, the most efficient way to access those would be to join any or all of the Groups within the trading room & then subscribe to receive email notifications whenever a new post, comment or reply is made to any or all of the Groups that you have joined.

You can elect from emails with the Group posts to be sent immediately, as a daily digest or a weekly digest (or no emails). Different settings are allowed for each group. Here’s a video on how to most effectively use the trading room, including the trading room groups & notification options. https://youtu.be/77kY_gzF9cA

BTW: There are 3 active long swing trades (official trades) right now: PPLT, ITB & KRE plus one active Long-term Trade on GLD. If you go to the top menu on the site & click or hover on Trade Idea, you can then select from the various sub-categories:

Swing Trades (trade with expected holding periods typically from a few weeks to a few months): Which are sorted by Long or Short and also by whether they are Trade Setups, Active Trades or Completed Trades. If you click on any trade category, a description of that category (or sub-category) can be found at the top of the page. Note: The categories are not mutually exclusive as a trade that has hit the first target but not the final target would be assigned as both an Active & Completed Trade.

Long-term Trades (i.e.-Trend trades or trades with expected holding periods of roughly 6 months or longer).

Growth & Income Trades (a sub-category of Long-term Trade with stocks or ETFs that pay a decent dividend & should benefit from both price appreciation plus the dividend income).

Completed Trades (official trades which have hit one or more of their price targets or the max. suggested stop). All official trade ideas on posted on RSOTC since the service was launched on January 1, 2012, successful or unsuccessful, are moved the Completed Trades category upon completion to be archived indefinitely for future reference. The Completed Trades are also released for public viewing (unless that trade is still active as well, i.e.- hit one or more targets but the final target or stop hasn’t been hit yet).

I find this to be a good source to reference how a particular stock or chart pattern has acted in the past as well as a way to view the performance of the official trade ideas on the site. You can also get a feel for the historic number of official trade ideas in the past, which will ebb & flow with market conditions.

Unofficial Trades (explained above & also sub-categorized by long or short).

Right Side Of The Chart is rolling out a new & improved system for email notifications when a new post (or posts) is published on the front page of the site. Additional details on how the new email notifications will work, including the various options, will follow but here are a few of the new features:

All current members of Right Side Of The Chart will be signed up to receive an email with the entire content, including all chart images, immediately after a new post is published on the front page. This will included both public (free content) as well as premium (subscriber only) posts. Members that are not currently subscribed to receive email notifications when a new front page post is published or those that are but do not wish to receive new posts via email can use the unsubscribe link located at the bottom of all emails that will be sent from the new system.

The new system will also be more user-friendly for public followers of RSOTC as well. Unlike the current email notification system, which automatically sends out a email notification with an excerpt of each new post along with a link to view the post on the site without differentiating between free & premium content, public followers of the site will now be able to receive a daily digest all new public (free content) posts, also with the full content of the post including any chart images, without having to click a link to visit the site, which often redirected them to the Membership Options page if that post was locked as premium content for subscribers. Premium content post excerpts will no longer be included in the RSOTC Daily Digest.

Non-members of the site that are currently signed up to receive email notifications will be added to the new & improved “Public Content Only” daily digest, which will also contain an unsubscribe link at the bottom of each daily digest that is sent. Note: Daily digests are only sent at the end of each day, 6pm ET, if there have been any new public posts made since the previous digest was sent.

Again, existing members will be automatically subscribed to the new immediate post notifications, which is beneficial as much of the premium content contains trade ideas & other timely and actionable analysis on various sectors, gold, commodities, etc. Should an existing member of the site cancel their membership or if someone on free trial membership decides not to subscribe as a Silver or Gold member at the end of their trial period, the system will automatically reassign them to the public daily digest email list (which they can unsubscribe from at any time).

IMPORTANT: If you are already subscribed to receive notifications of when a new post is published, you should receive two copies of this notification, one in the previous (current) format & another in the new format with a different appearance. If you were already subscribed to new post notifications & only received one email with the same format of new post notifications that you have been receiving, please contact me so I can look into the issue. Once the new notifications appear to be working fine, the previous notification system will be retired. Note: Public subscribers will continue to receive immediate notifications as well as the new Public-only content Daily Digest sent at 6pm ET until the previous system is retired.

As always, don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions, feedback or issues with the new email notification system.

Best regards,

Randy Phinney

(This 2nd notification of the new system was delayed about 15 minutes after the sending of the initial post as the new system was not yet activated)

First off, just a quick FYI on the recently posted WMB (Williams Companies Inc) Growth & Income Trade setup: I had incorrectly listed the price target in the previous post. The typo has been corrected, please re-visit that post to view the corrected details of that trade setup if you viewed it earlier and are considering a position.

I also wanted to reply to a couple of questions that member @trgfunds had posted in the comment section under the WMB setup. His comment: “Hi Randy thanks for the idea. I’m curious with these income trades do you ever worry about the negative earnings and/or dividend being higher than the earnings? A sudden announcement of cancellation, lowering, or suspension of the dividend can take a stock into an entirely new lower range for years. Thanks again!”

My long reply, which also includes some additional suggestions on how best to incorporate the trade ideas shared on RSOTC into your trading or investing:

@trgfunds – Excellent question & I’m glad that you asked as I feel those are very important considerations in a trade like WMB. I’m always trying to strike a balance between posting concise, yet comprehensive commentary although I could talk of hours or type pages on all the nuances & variables that go into each trade idea. As there are just so many factors that go into my analysis, I often struggle to keep my video updates under 30 minutes and my front page posts limited to just a few short paragraphs.

The problem is that trading or investing isn’t simple, rather quite complex with numerous variables & factors that need to be taken into account with every trade or investment candidate beyond simply what to buy & when to buy it. Being successful in trading isn’t any easier than being successful in any other career or endeavor, be it a professional athlete, doctor, lawyer, general contractor or whatever. Go down the line… pick your profession & name one that doesn’t take a lot of hard work & experience under you belt to have learned the hard lessons that may have been told to you but can only be truly ‘learned’ once experienced.

What that being said, and again, as a way to further impress upon what I wrote regarding the WMB setup as well as give you a direct response to your question, let me start by pasting the closing comments on that post which I had hoped would encompass all the points that you mentioned & then some as to list every possible risk event on a company in one of the most devastated industries in years, if not decades, would be quite time consuming:

“WMB is a natural gas operator, which aligns this trade with my longer-term bullish outlook on nat gas. However, WITHOUT EXCEPTION, risk & return go hand-in-hand. There are obvious fundamental reasons as to why Williams Companies is yielding over 16% in a near-zero interest rate environment. Additionally, WMB recently became involved in a legal tussle with Energy Transfer Equity LB, a company they are involved in a pending merger with, which you can read about by clicking here.

Bottom line: Always DYODD and as with all positions, make sure to properly diversify among various sectors/asset classes and if you decide this trade fits your risk tolerance, objectives & trading style, consider making a downward adjustment to your position size to account for the above above gain & loss potential on this trade.” (end closing comments)

Now that you mentioned it, I realize that what might be obvious to me may or may not be so to others. Yes, first & foremost on that list would be an increased likelihood of a dividend cut & possible suspension. Add to that the legal woes which I mentioned that could derail the pending merger and cause previously unforeseen legal expenses and/or a $1.48 billion payment to Energy Transfer if WMB walks away from the deal. Again, those are just some of the issues, most of which stem from the fact that WMB is in an industry that has been devastated as the result one of the most vicious bear markets in the energy sector in decades.

Now to segue into a closely related point that is worth discussing in detail and that is how best to incorporate the trade ideas shared here into their own trading or investing. To do so, let me use the following analogy:

I live in S. Florida where a good number of people make a living, either part or full-time, flipping houses. Many of those “flippers” work with one or more realtors in which to help find the hidden gems in which to profit from. The realtor’s job is simply to show potential investment opportunities to the flipper, often providing a some relevant information specific to each listing such as any potentially positive selling points such as good schools nearby, low property taxes, home improvements/upgrades such as tear-downs & major renovations in the neighborhood which will increase nearby comps, etc… as well as any potential negatives such as a new prison, dump or highway planned to be built nearby which will have a negative impact on surrounding home values.

However, should the flipper decide to move forward on a property, he or she must then do their own due diligence and make sure that the beneficial factors that the realtor had pointed out are indeed accurate and more importantly, they need to make sure that they are aware of any potential pitfalls, both in the surrounding area as well as anything specific to the house such as structural damage, a bad roof in need of repair/replacement, Chinese drywall that needs to be replaced, mold problems, permitting/zoning issues, etc… that the realtor did not disclose. Essentially, I am like the realtor, filtering through dozens if not hundreds of potential investing or trading opps every week and then passing along only those that appear most promising. To take this analogy a step further, once a flipper decides to buy a property, they typically do one of three things:

1) Flip it as is, with little to no improvements other than maybe a fresh coat of paint & a few new plants in the yard to add curb appeal. Make a quick buck with cash in hand ready for the next opportunity that comes along.

2) Pour some money into the property to update the house (new flooring, kitchen & bath remodel, window treatments, etc..) which can take months, yet result in a considerably higher return on their investment, or…

3) If they think that the property is located in an area with great longer-term potential, such as new, trendy area that is seeing a lot of tear-downs & major renovations, then they might take a longer-term view and decide to rent the property out for an extended period of time with the intention of selling it many months or even years later at a substantial profit.

One of the main reasons that I list multiple price targets on many of the trade ideas here, especially the Long-term & Growth & Income Trades, is that some traders prefer a quick, hit & run trading style: Get in & get out as quick a possibly. These traders would most likely target T1 on the trade ideas with multiple targets, typically employing a more active swing trading style with holding periods often measured in just days or weeks. Those trades fit the first home-flipper profile listed above.

The second example would mesh with the typically swing trader that might preferred to give their trades a little more room, i.e.- using wider stops than those only targeting T1 as well as a typical time frame from several weeks to several months. This type of swing trader might prefer to book partial or full profits at the 2nd or 3rd price target on a trade with 4 price targets listed.

The final example meshes with the longer-term swing or trend trader as well as investors that are comfortable with allowing wider stops (but still likely within the same 3:1 R/R that I prefer to use) and expected holding periods measured in months and occasionally a year or more. Personally, I wear all three of the hats above. At times, for example when the market is trading range bound, I might prefer to take the quick buck & book all profits at T1. During a trending market I might opt to hold out for any or all of the higher price targets. I trade more actively in my trading account while using a longer-term, less active approach in my retirement accounts.

The bottom line is that every trader or investor should only take trade ideas that mesh with their own unique risk tolerance, objectives & trading style. Although I do my best to communicate my thoughts on important factors to consider on a trade, such as above average risk of loss, excessive volatility, suggested adjustments to position size, etc.., invariably I will miss salient fundamental details on a trade such as legal woes, upcoming earnings announcements, an upcoming FDA ruling on a drug in clinical trials, etc.. and as such, I always encourage each trader to DYODD on any trade idea they are considering. Keep in mind that all the due diligence in the world can’t uncover the many unknown & unforeseen pitfalls that can cause a sudden drop in a stock. While losses are an unavoidable part of trading, they are certainly manageable. One of the most effective ways to mitigate unexpected losses on a position is to diversify your holdings and never put too much into any one position and/or sector.

Just when I thought this reply couldn’t get any longer, I almost forget to answer the other part of your question: “I’m curious with these income trades do you ever worry about the negative earnings and/or dividend being higher than the earnings?”

While I wouldn’t use the word “worry”, I am certainly aware of the precarious fundamental situation that cause any one company’s stock price to become depressed to levels at which their dividend, if not reduced at that point, results in a yield well above the average yield from other dividend paying stocks in the same sector, industry or even the broad market. More precise, I may not be aware of all the specific fundamental issues that are resulting in a stock paying an above average yield but I am a firm believer that if a stock is paying out a dividend well in excess of the average dividend rate at any point in time, that there is a reason or reasons why the stock prices is depressed, resulting in the above average dividend.. i.e. – I might not be aware of what the fundamental issues are but I am aware that there are fundamental issues.

When finding these Growth & Income trade ideas, all of which have above average dividend yields, I have two choices: Either pass on the trade in fear of a possibly dividend cut, which by the way, may have already been fully priced into the stock before the cut is actually announced, OR… take the trade after doing at least some quick DD by scanning the headlines & fundamentals while employing prudent money management techniques, such as proper position sizing (don’t take an oversized position), using stops calculated ideally using 3:1 or better R/R based on my preferred target(s), avoid over-exposure to any one sector or industry (e.g.- energy stocks shouldn’t account for much more than 20-30% of one’s portfolio), etc…

More to the part above the negative earnings, here are just a few of the recent Growth & Income Trade ideas on the site that hit on or more profit targets in recent month, most of which had depressed or negative earnings:
PIR: Final target hit for a 44% gain March 7th
VHI T2 hit for 39% gain March 7th
MOS Final target hit March 4th for 16%
POT T2 hit March 3rd for 17% gain
ENLK T2 hit for 20% gain Dec 23rd

Simple put, risk & return go hand in hand. Just glance the charts and/or fundamentals on these stocks at the time the trade was entered & you’ll quickly see that the more risky the trade seems (and very well may be), the more profit potential if has if the trade is successful. As always, pass on any trades that you are not 100% comfortable with as the next trading opportunity is always right around the corner.

Assuming that the expected reversal in the dollar begins soon, here are couple of bounce/pullback targets for the EUR/USD & USD/JPY currency pairs. Also note that a few changes have been made to the Market Analysis category archives on RSOTC:

The addition of a new “Forex/Currencies” sub-category, in which all posts containing charts or analysis on global currencies will be assigned to.

The addition of a new “Equity Market Analysis” sub-category as well.

Previously, equity (stock) market analysis was lumped into the former “General Market Analysis” category, which included all market analysis (stocks, bonds, gold, commodities, etc…). General Market Analysis has been re-named “Market Analysis (All Categories)”, which will still show a chronological listing of all posts relating to any global financial markets. To view only posts related to global equity markets, including the U.S. stock indices, select “Equity Market Analysis” under the “Market Analysis” tab located on the top menu bar of each page.

As before, to access the archives on a particular index, etf, stock, etc…, use the “Select Tag/Ticker” drop-down box located on the right-hand sidebar of the home page. All trade ideas are still accessible under the “Trading & Investment Ideas” tab on the top menu bar as well.

I’ve put together a few videos detailing several ways to follow Right Side Of The Chart which include both pop-up & audio alerts in your browser to notify you when a new post has been published as well as an option to receive a daily digest of all new posts by email. I am still working on resolving the issue whereby some of the email notifications that are sent out immediately following the publication of a new post are not being sent to some subscribers and should have that issue resolved very soon. Until then, those subscribed to receive immediate notifications of new posts by email might want to use one or more of these alternative notification options which utilize the site’s RSS feed.

This first video discusses what an RSS feed is, how to subscribe to one and the benefits of using an RSS reader, such as Feedly (discussed in this video) to follow not only Right Side Of The Chart but any other websites that you frequent.

Although it’s too far too early to say the most recent scenario (posted on USO will continue to play out (with a move up to the 19.80 level & possibly beyond), so far we have seen prices break below the recent trading range only to reverse shortly afterwards & moving impulsively higher since regaining the bottom of the range.

In yesterday’s mid-day market/long trade ideas update, I had mentioned that the UCO/USO long trade would be considered stopped out but that updates on USO would continue. I had also mentioned that USO had broken below the recent trading range on the 60-minute chart, which was the preferred scenario first laid out last Friday (first chart below). What I had meant to add to yesterday’s update was that the 5 energy stock trade ideas (NOV, QEP, RIG, SFY, & SLB) were intentionally left on as both Trade Setups & Active Long Trade ideas, as the charts remain constructive and the USO flush-out/bear-trap scenario still looks likely. My apologies for now catching that oversight until now.

My 4th & final intermediate-term target was hit on Friday. That, coupled with the bullish divergences in place on the 60 minute time frame, means that the 1% gap up today was likely the beginning of a larger counter-trend rally. Blue horizontal lines mark my bounce targets with T2 (86.80) my preferred target at this time & T3 (87.60) my current final target. Only a move 1% or more below Friday’s lows will negate this scenario. Keep in mind that I took us a while to get down here and so it might take several days, possibly weeks, to retrace a third or half of the move down from the March 7th peak in the $NDX/QQQ (my 2nd & 3rd targets come in around the 38.2% & 50% Fibonacci retracement levels of the entire move off the highs). As such, the market updates might be light for a while unless anything significant develops.

Just to clarify, a preferred target on RSOTC is the profit target on a trade which hits the “sweet-spot” on the R/R curve whereas the final target is the level at which the R/R on the trade no longer remains clearly skewed in the direction of that move. Typically, but not always, the final target is the level at which I believe a trend reversal is likely as well. I will often book full or partial profits at my preferred target while I will always book full profits at my final target, assuming that I still hold some or all of the position.

The ABG (Asbury Automotive) Active Short Trade has hit the first target (T1 at 46.75) for a 9.7% gain since entry just a couple of weeks ago. Consider booking partial or full profits and/or lowering stops, depending on your trading plan. The reason that multiple targets are used on RSOTC is to accommodate various trading styles. Short-term, more active swing traders might prefer to book partial or full profits at one of the initial target levels or possibly micro-manage a position around these levels (sell/cover on the target & go long again/re-short on the bounce). Less active swing traders might choose to hold out for one or more of the higher (numerically) targets, shooting for larger gains while using larger stops.

When a trade setup is originally posted, the target levels are where I would expect a decent reaction (bounce and/or consolidation around that price level). However, the charts are dynamic… constantly changing and as such, the best time to evaluate whether a reaction off a target level is likely to occur is at the time, or just before, the trade reaches that target level. With trades based off the daily time frames, as the majority of trade ideas shared here are, I will typically reference the 60 minute chart to assess how likely a reaction off a price target will be. Things to look for are candlestick reversal patterns, divergences, capitulatory volume patterns, moving averages, etc… However, I also put a lot of weighting into the outlook for the broad markets and/or the sector that the trade belongs to. More often than not, if the broad market or a sector looks poised for a reversal (e.g.- a bounce off support) then the trade in question will follow suit. The point is that there are numerous technical variables that come into play when deciding when to book profits on a winning trade or continue to let it ride. It is also important to define one’s time frame & preferred targets for any trade before entering (failing to plan is planning to fail!). However, even the best thought out plans should always be open to revision, should the facts (i.e.- charts) change, which they often do.

With that being said, here are the previous & updated daily charts of ABG along with the 60 minute chart. I still favor a relatively minor bounce off T1 for two reasons: 1) The broad market (SPY) hit my first downside target yesterday and as expected, has bounced from there and might have a little more upside left. If & when the SPY takes out yesterday’s lows, I’d expect the selling in the broad market to accelerate with the SPY likely heading towards T2 (on the 2-hour chart) and most short trades following suit. The other reason 2) that I still favor a bounce off T1 on the ABG trade is the potential positive divergence in place on the 60 minute chart. I consider positive divergences on the MACD as “potential” when the indicator is making a higher low against prices making a lower low but only confirmed once the fast line crosses above the slow line on the MACD (bullish crossover).

I just wanted to reiterate the importance of defining one’s time frame when trading. The market analysis on RSTOC, as well as many of the trade ideas share here often use charts of varying time frames (e.g.- 60 minute, daily, weekly, etc…). Typical swing traders, trend traders and investors should not be overly concerned with the intraday charts (15 min, 120 minute, etc…), other than maybe to give a heads-up or early buy/sell signal on a trade. The current scenario laid out on the 120 minute (2 hour) time frame for the SPY shows an expected bounce off the T1 level, which was previously stated as 177-177.50. As I type, the SPY has so far hit an LOD of 177.12, smack in the lower end of the target range and close enough for very active, short-term traders to book some profits on shorts or position long for a possible quick bounce.

I will almost always give a higher weighting to the longer time frames and what the bigger picture is telling us right now is that the major US stock indices have recently broken below key uptrend line support on the daily time frames (with some at or near minor support levels). Those charts can be view in real-time via the Live Chart Links page under “U.S. Stock Indices”. There are many ways to incorporate the market analysis and trade ideas posted on RSOTC. In the example above, nimble, active traders might try to profit off a quick bounce off this first support level while typical swing traders might decide to take advantage of any bounce today to add some short exposure. A more conventional, less aggressive trader might even wait until the AAPL earnings are out of the way and wait to see the markets trade below today’s lows or even print another close below the daily uptrend lines/wedge patterns before adding any new short exposure or further reducing long exposure. The important thing is to define your time frame and trading style in order focus on the technical events that are relevant to your trading and tune out those which may just be “noise” (i.e.- the very short-term gyrations in the charts).

As I’m still leaning towards a marginal new low (below the late June lows) in gold prices, as well as many of the mining stocks on my radar, I will hold off on adding any new Active Trades in the mining sector at this time unless I see a well-defined and objective entry on any specific mining stocks. As with the Gold & Silver Stocks post made back on June 26th, the very day the mining sector hit a major bottom before gaining roughly 40% from there, my preference will be to use a ‘shotgun’ approach of scaling into the most promising individual stocks within the mining sector although one could also use GDX as a proxy and more diversified vehicle for trading or investing in the sector. My best guess would be that the sector may continue to drift lower or chop around until sometime around mid-January but with a lot of eyes on the sector right now and gold so close to that long-term uptrend line, in addition to the gold stocks coming off extreme oversold readings with bullish divergences in place on the weekly charts, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the gold stocks begin to move higher before the metal. This 2-hour GDX chart shows a couple of likely near-term scenarios, should GDX make a solid breakout above this most recent descending channel:

I’m also working towards a goal of providing live chart links to as many of the trade ideas as possible, especially for the more promising trades, such as this P (Pandora Media Inc) short trade that was first mentioned in the Nov 19th Social Media Stocks Video. The live chart for the P short trade can be viewed by clicking here. At some point in the future, links to live charts on all the trade ideas might be located together under the respective categories below the Trading & Investments Ideas master category found at the menu bar toward the top of the site. Currently, trade ideas with a live, annotated chart will include a link to the live chart under each recent post. Static posts are also provided for a quick visual reference as well as a useful educational resource by providing a pictorial history of each trade. As always, all posts associated with a specific stock, index, or ETF can easily be referenced by using the Posts By Ticker Symbol drop-down box on the sidebar located on the home page. For those following a particular trade, either bookmark the live chart link (or save the chart as your own if you subscribe to StockCharts.com, checking back for any modifications or updated to the live chart from time to time) or you may continue to reference the recent posts on the trade as discussed above, where the live chart link will remain at least as long as the trade is still active.

Regarding the market, nothing much has changed since my last update. The US stock indices experienced the expected “Washington Relief Rally” late last week which sparked a rally that took them back to what is so far only typical counter-trend retracement levels. However, with the $SPX bouncing back well within the recently broken wedge pattern, my preference is to see prices break back below the wedge once again before adding any additional short exposure. Should prices continue much beyond Friday’s highs, the bearish scenario will begin to rapidly diminish. Therefore, how the market performs this week might give us some insight to whether new highs are in order soon or a resumption of the downtrend, which would likely manifest in a very impulsive manner.

Today’s widely anticipated DC kick-the-can-even-further rally gave us some mixed signals which have somewhat obscured the technical picture. Starting with the bullish case, the $SPX did manage to close comfortably back inside of the recently broken bearish rising wedge pattern, effectively negating the recent sell signal. The Russell 2000 Small-cap Index managed to post an impressive 2.5% gain after hammering to close right on the bottom of it’s large rising wedge pattern yesterday (including a brief, intra-day “fake-down” below the lower trendline). The $DJIA finished with a strong ramp into the close which also took prices back above it’s recently broken uptrend line. All-in-all, there were certainly some bullish technical developments today.

On the bearish case, or more accurately the potentially bearish case, the two most important indices, the S&P 500 & the Nasdaq 100, closed at horizontal resistance as well as key Fibonacci retracement levels which are typically hit during counter-trend rallies. The $NDX (QQQ) close just slightly above the 61.8% retracement level which was highlighted earlier today while the $SPX (SPY) closed essentially right on the 50% retracement level of it’s prior drop from the Sept 19th (Fed meeting induced) all-time high. Therefore, bears can argue that today’s news induced rally was nothing more than a typical counter-trend move in an on-going downtrend which may have run it’s course today while the bulls can argue that the recent false breakdowns were nothing but bear-traps in which to provide the fuel to propel the market to new highs in the coming weeks/month. Personally I still believe that the longer-term (daily & weekly charts) remain clearly bearish and that any upside from where the markets closed today is limited. However, as stated earlier today, with the $SPX (the single most important index, IMO) now trading back above the bottom of the wedge pattern, I do not plan to add short exposure until/unless prices move back below that level soon. Basically I’m in wait & see mode and with volume likely to be light tomorrow with the quasi-holiday (Columbus Day), it will probably early next week before we can get a good read on things.

A new widget box highlighting the five most recent posts (each post title can be clicked to view the entire post).

Live Chart Links. This widget box will have links to the live (updated) annotated charts of the major US indices, soon to include links to live commodity and market indicator charts as well. The list of chart links in this area may change over time, with the most relevant indices or indicators at the time included. Ultimately, live links to all major US & international equity indices as well as commodities and market indicators will be available under the Market Analysis section.

Drag & drop functionality. Each widget box (with a gray title bar on top) can now be dragged & dropped anywhere on the sidebar in order to customize that area based on each users preference (click image to expand).

Collapsible/expandable widgets. The sidebar widget boxes (with gray title bar) can be collapsed or expanded by clicking the < or > icon located in the upper right-hand side. note: Both the Collapse/expand feature and the drap & drop feature settings are stored in your browser’s cookies. Therefore, clearing your cookies will cause your sidebar settings to revert to the default upon erasing your cookies unless you’ve selected the option to save cookies for this site.

Category specific sidebar widgets (e.g.- gold, silver and commodities charts and quotes) on the right-hand side of the Gold & Commodities section (found under Market Analysis in the menu at the top of the site).

There are some additional features that will be rolled out over the next few months so take a look at the various sidebars from time to time for any new additions. The video below provides a more detailed overview on how best to utilize the new sidebar features mentioned above. As always, videos are best viewed when selecting the 720p HD quality setting and viewing in Full screen format (or the “large player size”, available when played in YouTube, for very large monitors).

Targets are listed on this 4-hour chart.
Although all profit target posted on the trade ideas have a good chance of being hit based on my analysis of the chart, I view targets this way: Logically, the lower the target (numerically, e.g.- T1, T2, etc…) the better chance it has of being hit, as that level is closest to the current price. However, the final target, although having a lower probability of being hit, still has a relative good chance based on my interpretation of the technicals along with other factors such as the outlook for the broad market, current sentiment & short-interest measures, etc… Typically the final target is set at a level in which the R/R is no longer clearly favorable to remain in the trade and therefore I will book profits on any and all shares that I might still own. A preferred target, which is often mentioned on a trade, is the level where the current “sweet spot” on the R/R curve is at the time, as illustrated in this example (chart).
