Correct, retirement accounts are not conducive to active trading (day trading and/or actively swing trading with holding periods of just a few days or so) due to free-riding violations/restrictions on settled funds. Not that I encourage active trading in retirement accounts, especially for those that aren't seasoned traders but the one exception to the rule that I've found is with Interactive Brokers. They offer what they refer to as "Margin IRAs". Although they are not true margin accounts, which allow the account holder to trade on leverage with the existing securities as collateral, the IB margin IRAs are exempt from free-riding violations (you are allowed to trade with unsettled funds... i.e.- sell a stock or ETF you buy with unsettled funds before that trade setttles).
In addition, they even allow for shorting... although only futures contracts as IRS regulations prohibit short-selling of stocks & ETFs within a IRA.

I didn't read yours before I replied but yes, it is the unsettled funds rule and forces me to either have cash on hand and trade with a low % of my account or to hold positions.
It is a good thing, but because we have had profitable trades lately some of my funds are tied up in that rule at the moment.
Hard to play daily bounces in tax advantaged accounts

Rules of "Good Faith Violations" which are that you can only trade on settled funds. So you enter a trade and T+2 is when it settles. If you sell prior to that the funds are not settled. So if you buy again with the funds you have to hold for T+2 otherwise they lock the funds.
Day trading is attempted to be limited in "tax advantaged accounts"

Do you mean 401k rules & if so, what rules regarding holding overnight? Although I decided to take partial profits here, I do think there is more upside to come... at least T3 & quite likely the 105.87 area (resistance on my daily chart).

The only issue I can think one might run into trading in a 401k or IRA is the free-riding rule, which says if you buy a stock with unsettled funds (proceeds from another trade you recently closed), you can't turn around & sell the stock right away. Let me know if you mean something else.
