and one other thing I noticed ... with the yen strengthening and the Japan market going up over the last months, going in the opposite of usual direction ... the only other time I noticed this happening was in the run up to the 2018 highs ...

Thanks Randy! ... right on cue I was leaving a comment about the USD breaking below 104 against the Yen on the other post and then see this later ... the newspapers here in Japan are crowing about the Nikkei closing at a high not seen since 1991 today but ... "underneath the hood" as you say I took a look at the components of the Nikkei 225 and saw that if you line up the 225 stocks by 3 year performance, which even gives a couple months of running up to the 2018 high, and there are a grand total of 40 stocks that are green in that time period against the 180 or so red stocks ... the EWJ mostly resembles the N225 but but underperforms a bit - maybe a currency thing? with the yen strengthening last few years? ... anyway, the Topix 500 is broader and market weighted and has something of a different picture, 13% off its 2018 highs and a descending trendline to contend with ... and both indexes have negative divergences during this steadily grinding up wedge of the last few months ...
