While there may certainly be other fundamental reasons in play, it seems very likely that ALK was caught off-guard/un-hedged against that big 75% bull run in oil prices. LUV may have been partially or fully hedged although I will say that is only an educated guess on my part. One could read through their recent 10-Q’s to confirm what, if any, impact that rising fuel costs had on the company since the bull run in crude started back in June ’17.
